Artist

J. Fenwick Lansdowne

J. Fenwick Lansdowne (Canadian, b. Hong Kong, 1937–2008) was a passionate naturalist whose careful study of and innate affinity with the world of birds forged an extraordinary body of work. His meticulous, sensitive avian portraits are unsurpassed in their fidelity to the birds’ natural expressions, behaviors, and habitats. A birder from a young age—he was observing and drawing the avian world as a 12-year-old—Lansdowne became one of the most renowned and esteemed bird artists of all time. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, awarded the Order of British Columbia, and elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. Lansdowne’s paintings and books have contributed richly to the field of natural history.

Busy summer

How perky, busy, interested is J. Fenwick Lansdowne's image. The little wren's vitality is echoed in the variety and dancing energy of the green plants and flowers. Life completely engaged.
