Gustav Klimt: Iconoclastic Symbolist

Gustav Klimt was a prominent Austrian symbolist painter known for his distinct style that combined symbolic, erotic, and allegorical subjects.

Disenchanted with the conservative artistic establishment of his time, Klimt and a group of like-minded artists founded the Vienna Secession, a movement that aimed to break away from traditional art practices.

Klimt is perhaps best known for his "Golden Phase," during which he incorporated gold leaf into many of his paintings. Iconic works from this period include "The Kiss" (1907–08) and "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I" (1907), the latter being one of his many portraits of women that combined eroticism with Byzantine intricacies and decorative flourishes.

His sensual and erotic pieces often sparked controversy — "The Kiss" and other paintings were criticized for their explicit sensuality and eroticism, but are now celebrated for these same qualities.

Klimt's influence lives on. He paved the way for modernists, including his notable protégé Egon Schiele. Today, Klimt's paintings are among the most expensive ever sold, and his distinctive style, marked by patterns, mosaics, and a dreamlike quality, remains iconic.
