A spectacular merging of art and science, Ernst Haeckel’s 1904 Kunstformen der Natur (or Art Forms in Nature) celebrates the beauty and evolution of life forms. Haeckel, a German biologist and an early supporter of Darwinism, was fascinated by everything from microscopic sea organisms to carnivorous plants to exotic reptiles. With this landmark study of flora and fauna, he aimed to widen the general public’s understanding of naturalism. These illustrations are from a copy of Kunstformen der Natur in the Case Book Collection in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. The Library holds over 168 million items in almost all media and in more than 470 languages.
