Product Description
Mabel Royds 2020 Wall Calendar
English artist Mabel Royds (1874–1941) is best known for her colorful botanical prints. At age fifteen, she won a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy in London but chose the Slade School. She lived in Paris, Toronto, and Edinburgh, and travelled throughout Europe, the Middle East, and India. She studied Japanese printmaking processes and learned to create the images, carve the woodblocks, and produce the prints herself. Her bold woodcut technique and vibrant colors give her work an almost abstract quality, unlike other printmakers of the time. Royds enjoyed depicting the simple, yet beautiful, things around her, including flowers at their prime and in their dying days. From 1933 to 1938, she made a series of flower prints, twelve of which are reproduced in this calendar and are in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland.
