Alert, intelligent, and social, Asian small-clawed otters (Aonyx cinereus) live in family groups of up to twenty. Though small in size they have a large “vocabulary,” using at least twelve different vocalizations in social situations and when threatened or sounding an alarm. Their main threat is from habitat destruction (deforestation); humans have sounded the alarm and listed this species as Vulnerable. Lifespan in the wild is not known, though in human care these little otters can live more than twenty years.
