This adult male ladder-backed woodpecker (Picoides scalaris) is perched on an icy branch of possumhaw holly bedecked with berries. A quick and quiet little bird, it is an adept forager that prefers to eat insects. It is often seen darting between branches, thorns, and spines of trees, shrubs, and cacti in arid habitats of the southwestern United States and Central America.
