Mostly solitary animals, polar bears (Ursus maritimus) spend time together in breeding pairs and as family groups while a mother nurses and raises her cubs, which lasts more than two years. A mother will not mate until her cubs are on their own, leading to high competition among males and one of the lowest reproductive rates of all mammals.
