With his shapely figure, snazzy topknot, and distinctive facial and belly patterning, the male California quail (Callipepla californica) struts his stuff in the western United States and British Columbia, primarily. This social bird keeps company in coveys until pairing off for spring mating season, when he vigilantly defends his territory, his mate or mates, and their offspring. California quail are tolerant of people but adept at keeping their secluded nesting sites secret.
