Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua), dwellers of the Antarctic Peninsula and surrounding islands, prefer rocky, ice-free terrain when not in the water. They live on cliffs and plains along coastlines, building their nests from pebbles. Males will court females by presenting the best stones, and a mated pair will often rear two chicks per season, with both incubating the eggs and caring for the young.
