Endangered green sea turtle hatchlings (Chelonia mydas) use paddle-like flippers to make a mad scramble from sandy nest to sea, all the while vulnerable to predatory crabs, seagulls, and humans. Green sea turtles that survive this harrowing passage and subsequent years of being preyed upon by fish can grow to 700 pounds and enjoy up to 100 years of cruising tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. Their big flippers render them strong and graceful swimmers.
