Blue-footed boobies by Tui De Roy
The blue-footed booby (Sula nebouxii) is native to Pacific coastal regions of North, Central, and South America—from California to Peru and the Galápagos Islands. Strictly a marine bird, it comes ashore on rocky islands only to breed. Males woo females in a kind of blue-footed soft-shoe, raising their feet and flapping their wings to impress the potential mate. The male’s foot color is important; the feet become brighter when the bird is well fed, allowing the female to gauge how strong and healthy he is.
