Product Description
Kawase Hasui 2019 Wall Calendar
In an era of rapid industrial and urban development in Japan, Kawase Hasui (Japanese, 1883–1957) was famous for prints of serene landscapes and waterways. His impressionist-influenced images emphasized the beauty of Japan’s rural countryside, the illumination of land and water by sun and moon, and the changing seasons—his rain, snow, and night scenes were highly acclaimed. Often on the road in search of inspiration, Hasui brought his watercolor sketches to the printing studio of publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, where they were transformed into woodblock prints by a skillful team. One of the greatest and most prolific artists of the shin hanga movement, Hasui produced over six hundred woodblock prints during his forty-year career. In 1956, he was awarded the prestigious title of Living National Treasure by the Japanese government.
