Tosa Mitsuoki (Japanese, 1617–1691) is credited with reviving the Tosa school, which was founded in the 15th century and dedicated to Japanese art and lore (yamato-e) rather than the Chinese styles prevalent at the time. Mitsuoki paired original designs with a consistently precise and refined style, becoming a collected and revered painter, especially of bird-and-flower images. Here are two of his paintings dating from 1691.
