Kathy DeZarn Beynette: When I Am Not Myself

Fabulously fun artist Kathy DeZarn Beynette is back with another children’s book of paintings and poems compassionately connecting humans with a menagerie of Earth’s creatures. In When I Am Not Myself, Beynette presents original sketches alongside her finished works in a fascinating and educational look into the creative process. Accompanied by gentle and playful tales, these paintings highlight special predicaments and traits across the animal world. With each page, the author transforms her passion for animals, art, and the written word into charming lessons to show how we are all connected, no matter how different we may seem. When I am a Shrimp / I already know / That I’m very tiny / So don’t tell me so. When I am a Zebra / My stripes look OK, / But I’d like to try / Wearing checks for one day. When I am Myself / (as I have been since birth), / I’m a little bit like / Most creatures on Earth.

Kathy DeZarn Beynette

Kathy DeZarn Beynette’s joyful, whimsical paintings are infused with her passion for animals, art, and the written word. Viewing her work, one feels drawn into a narrative; her creatures have distinct personalities and speak volumes with their eyes. “Before I became a painter,” Beynette says, “I wrote fiction and poetry, which probably explains my narrative approach to painting.” Her art, wrote one commentator, “comes with an enormous depth of human feeling attached. Fun and caring without sentimentality. Straight to the heart pieces.” Beynette’s storytelling talents combine with her endearing artwork to gently evoke life lessons. Her creatures follow her wherever she goes, but the painting happens in her studio in Alexandria, Virginia.
