Childe Hassam

Like the European Impressionists, Childe Hassam (American, 1859–1935) used broken strokes of bright color to capture the ever-changing effects of light and atmosphere. After studying in Paris, he returned to the United States, where, in 1898, he was a founding member of The Ten, a group of American painters who specialized in the Impressionist style. A native New Englander and longtime resident of New York City, Hassam became known for his urban and coastal scenes. He often summered on Appledore Island, off the coast of New Hampshire, where he produced some of his best-known works. A prolific and industrious artist, Hassam received the prestigious Gold Medal of Honor for lifetime achievement from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
