Makoto Nakamura (Japanese, b. 1947)
Tessellations have their roots in ancient Rome, where artisans used small tiles to make bigger pictures, or tessellata. M. C. Escher was inspired by these and created his own tessellations of repeating patterns without gaps or overlaps. Makoto Nakamura, in turn, was inspired by Escher. Nakamura, who works digitally, is one of the foremost tessellation artists in the world and founded the Japan Tessellation Design Association.
