Peace on Earth, 1914, by Henry Fitch Taylor (American, 1853–1925)
American artist Henry Fitch Taylor was known to paint landscapes alongside Claude Monet, Childe Hassam, and other fellow impressionist painters. In time, his work shifted. He managed a New York gallery and helped organize the revolutionary 1913 Armory Show that introduced Americans to the modern art flourishing in Europe. He experimented with cubism and other avant-garde styles. And he wrote a treatise called The Taylor System of Organized Color that explored color’s physical and psychological impact, and even correlated it to music. In this, 1914’s Peace on Earth, Taylor conveys his perspective on color’s spiritual power.
