Description
Influenced by their Postimpressionist contemporaries in France, the painters now known as the Scottish Colourists forged a new, bolder and brighter direction in early-twentieth-century British art. J. D. Fergusson (1874–1961), Samuel J. Peploe (1871–1935), F. C. B. Cadell (1883–1937), and George Leslie Hunter (1877–1931) brought elements of Fauvism and Cubism and a French palette of intense color to their Scottish landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Though perhaps underappreciated at home, the four enjoyed a highly successful Paris exhibition in 1931 and have since come to be internationally recognized as among the twentieth century’s most important British artists. This book of thirty postcards presents a crosssection of the Scottish Colourists’ finest works, all reproduced from the collection of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh.
