Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864–1901)
“A Montrouge”—Rosa La Rouge, 1886–1887
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, an artist who overcame illness and disability to pursue his passion, produced some of the most memorable art of fin-de-siècle Paris. Toulouse-Lautrec frequented the bohemian nightclubs and dance halls of Montmartre, immersing himself in the nightlife and making sketches. He later transformed those sketches into brightly colored paintings and lithographs, brilliantly capturing the excitement, gaiety, and pathos of that world.
This painting is from the extraordinary collection assembled by Dr. Albert C. Barnes, who established the Barnes Foundation in 1922 near Philadelphia.
