John George Brown (American, b. England, 1831–1913)
Reading on the Rocks, Grand Manan, c. 1877
Born into a poor family in Durham, England, John George Brown came to the United States in 1853, supporting himself by working in a New York glass factory before finding success as a painter of poor city children, especially those who worked for pennies as bootblacks. This charming image shows a young woman in fashionable attire reading on the seashore at Grand Manan, a popular resort island in the Canadian province of New Brunswick.
