Les Fétiches, 1938
One of twentieth-century America’s most distinguished artists, Lois Mailou Jones sojourned in many places around the world, and her immersion in profoundly differing cultures makes itself known through the diversity of her art. But Jones painted Les Fétiches before she had ever seen Africa: she was living in Paris in 1938, a time when many black artists were investigating the cultural and aesthetic legacies of their ancestral land.
