Childe Hassam (1859–1935)
In the Garden (Celia Thaxter in Her Garden), 1892
The preeminent American impressionist, Childe Hassam (1859–1935) used strokes of color to capture the ever-changing effects of light and atmosphere. He summered for decades on Appledore Island, one of the Isles of Shoals, a few miles off the coast of New Hampshire, and it was there that he painted In the Garden, an evocative glimpse of a New England summer.
