“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
With the nation’s economy in tatters, Franklin Roosevelt’s 1932 landslide victory over presidential incumbent Herbert Hoover marked the beginning of a dramatic shift in the role of the federal government. Acting swiftly with a set of reforms known as the New Deal, Roosevelt imposed tight controls over industry and agriculture and created emergency organizations, such as the Public Works Administration, to mitigate the effects of the Depression. He led the nation through World War II and was elected to four terms as US president.
