Auguste Renoir (1841–1919)
The Apple Seller
Renoir’s humble origins as the son of a poor tailor taught him to appreciate life’s simple pleasures: fruit, flowers, sunny meadows, and, above all, family life. Later, his training as a porcelain painter instilled in the young artist a love of sumptuous color and graceful brushwork. Renoir combined both elements in The Apple Seller, which depicts his wife, Aline, buying apples from a country girl.
