Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853–1890)
The Poplars at Saint- Rémy, 1889
In May 1889, Vincent van Gogh admitted himself to a psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy, France, well aware of his own fragile mental health. But once he regained some measure of stability, he resumed painting with a passion and completed about 150 paintings there within a year, including The Poplars at Saint-Rémy.
