William Bell Scott (Scottish, 1811–1890)
Left panel (Shakespeare) of a four-leaf screen with portraits of Shakespeare, Milton, Chaucer, and Spenser, 19th century
Scottish painter and poet William Bell Scott was closely associated with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and, like the Pre-Raphaelites, often painted historical subjects in high color and intense detail. His masterly four-leaf screen features medallion portraits of literary greats William Shakespeare (1564–1616), John Milton (1608–1674), Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1340–1400), and Edmund Spenser (c. 1552–1599).
