Dragon Breathing Clouds (detail), 18th–19th century
With subject matter ranging from serene nature scenes to dynamic characters from Kabuki and mythology, Japanese ukiyo-e (“pictures of the floating world”) prints have held enduring appeal since the height of their popularity during the mid-nineteenth century. Ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Japanese, 1797–1861) is known for his superb sense of color and design, as revealed in his striking Dragon Breathing Clouds diptych.
