Mercury, c. 1875–1880, by Evelyn De Morgan
Mercury was the messenger of the gods, the conductor of souls to the lower world, and a dangerous foe. He also had the power to impart sleep and dreams. Here he is depicted as a young athlete carrying the caduceus (magical, winged rod, usually entwined by two snakes) and wearing winged sandals and a winged helmet (petasus). The background shows a mountainous scene. The model for this painting was Evelyn De Morgan’s brother, Spencer Pickering.
