Product Description
From Field to Field Notecard Folio
The versatile and acclaimed British artist Graham Sutherland (1903–1980), having studied engraving at the University of London’s Goldsmith College, began his career as a printmaker. He later taught etching, engraving, and book illustration and designed glassware, ceramics, stamps, and posters for Shell, the Orient Line, and London Transport. In the mid-1930s, during a visit to the Welsh border country, Sutherland began painting landscapes and natural forms in a visionary style; in 1936 he exhibited at the International Surrealist Exhibition in London. After working as an official war artist during World War II, he took a number of painting commissions for churches and became a celebrated portrait painter, completing a controversial portrait of Winston Churchill in 1954. In 1962 he designed the vast tapestry Christ in Glory for Coventry Cathedral. The two images in this folio are from the London Transport Museum, one of the finest poster archives in the world. For a century, copies of every poster produced for the Underground were kept, and when the collection was transferred to the Museum in the 1980s, it contained more than 5,000 printed posters and almost 1,000 original artworks. Steadily growing since then, it now offers a uniquely comprehensive overview of a century of British graphic design.
