Product Description
John Everett Millais Notecard Folio
John Everett Millais (English, 1829–1896) was a child prodigy who at age eleven was admitted to the prestigious school of the Royal Academy of Arts. There he met Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, and other like-minded artists who came to reject the exaggerated poses and conventions of Mannerism, the preferred style of the day. In 1848 they founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a reform movement in the arts aimed at returning to the detailed realism popular before the age of Italian Renaissance master Raphael Sanzio.

Painted in 1851, The Bridesmaid is a fine example of the almost photographic quality favored by Millais during this period. Its style stands in contrast to that of The Farmer’s Daughter, painted around 1863; the latter’s bolder, more expressive brushwork is evidence of the shift in style Millais underwent in the 1860s.

Millais became one of the premier English portrait painters of his time and enjoyed great financial success. Elected President of the Royal Academy in early 1896, he died later that year.
