Product Description
George Leslie Hunter Notecard Folio
George Leslie Hunter (Scottish, 1877–1931) was born on the Isle of Bute in Rothesay, but moved with his family in 1892 to California. When his family returned to Scotland in 1900, Hunter remained in San Francisco, working as an illustrator; a few years later, much of Hunter’s early work was destroyed in the earthquake and resulting fire of 1906. Shortly afterward, Hunter returned to his native soil, settling in Glasgow, where his first solo exhibition was held in 1915 in association with the influential art dealer Alexander Reid. During the 1920s, Hunter achieved prominence with Francis Cadell, J. D. Fergusson, and Samuel Peploe—a group of artists who became known as the Scottish Colourists—all influenced, in varying degrees, by French impressionism, postimpressionism, and Les Fauves. Hunter became particularly adept at depicting light and is well known for his paintings of the coastal areas of Fife.

The two works reproduced for this folio are housed in Edinburgh’s Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. When the gallery opened in 1960, it inherited a small number of twentieth-century works from the National Gallery of Scotland. More than forty years later, the collection comprises over 5,000 items ranging from the late nineteenth century to the present and encompasses work in a wide variety of media—from paintings, bronzes, and works on paper to kinetic sculpture and video installations.

Contains 5 each of the following images:
Cottages, Fife, c. 1923–1924
Reflections, Balloch, c. 1929–1930
