Lois Mailou Jones Boxed Notecards
Loïs Mailou Jones (American, 1905–1998) was born in Boston. As a child she began drawing and painting with watercolors; the latter remained her favorite medium throughout her life. After graduating from School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Jones worked as a textile designer. During this period, she encountered the prejudice that prompted her to shift her artistic focus to the fine arts. A regionalist style surfaced in the paintings created in her brief time teaching at Palmer Memorial Institute in North Carolina. (There she also coached basketball, taught folk dancing, and played piano for Sunday church services.)

In 1937 a fellowship enabled Jones to study in Paris, where she received widespread encouragement and acceptance, producing almost forty finished pieces during her year abroad. After earning a degree from Howard University, Jones taught there for decades. Frequent visits to Haiti and further explorations of Africa influenced her style and subject matter, as did philosopher Alain Locke (who also taught at Howard), who encouraged artists of color to draw inspiration from African arts. Jones, whose heralded career stretched from the late Harlem Renaissance to contemporary times, continued to paint until her death in 1998.

The four paintings reproduced for this notecard assortment were selected from the retrospective exhibition Loïs Mailou Jones: A Life in Vibrant Color, organized by the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Loïs Mailou Jones Pierre-Noel Trust.

Edgartown Beach, 1994
Ville d’Houdain, Pas-de-Calais, France, 1951
