Magnolia altissima, 1767, from Hortus Europæ Americanus, by Mark Catesby
This image of Magnolia altissima by English naturalist Mark Catesby adorns his posthumously published botanical tome Hortus Europæ Americanus: or, A Collection of 85 Curious Trees and Shrubs, The Produce of North America. Catesby, a fellow of London's Royal Society, greatly admired the fragrant white blossoms of the “Laurel-tree of Carolina,” a “magnificent evergreen.”
