Printmaker, painter, and collage-artist Miriam Schapiro (American, 1923–2015) gained attention as a leader in both the Feminist Art Movement and the Pattern and Decoration movement. Schapiro coined the term femmage for her collage compositions created out of commonplace elements—such as lace, fabric scraps, buttons, rickrack, sequins, and tea towels—using craft techniques that are strongly associated with women.
