Asplenium marinum (Sea spleenwort fern)
John Edward Sowerby (English, 1825–1870) followed in a long family tradition of natural history illustration and publishing. In addition to illustrating The Ferns of Great Britain, he produced, among others, Fern Allies, British Wild Flowers, and Useful Plants of Great Britain.
Founded in 1670 as a medicinal plant garden, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh now boasts the second richest collection of plants species in the world. The Garden, publicly funded since the eighteenth century, is dedicated to discovering and describing plants and their relationships, evolution, conservation, and biology.
