His talent for drawing recognized at an early age, Sydenham Edwards (Welsh, 1768–1819) was trained in botany and botanical illustration at the behest of William Curtis, a publisher of botanical works. Edwards proved to be a prolific and immensely popular illustrator, producing more than 1,200 watercolors for Curtis’s Botanical Magazine before establishing his own Botanical Register in 1815.
Founded in 1670 as a medicinal plant garden, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh now boasts the second richest collection of plants species in the world and is an internationally renowned center for plant science and education.
