The emperor is the largest of penguins and among the largest of birds. Celebrated for its remarkable treks across Antarctic ice and its long vigils over delicate eggs, it huddles in big groups when temperatures drop. Known to live forty years, all emperor penguins start out as tiny chicks covered in down. Until they grow their adult plumage—which is waterproof, unlike down—they depend entirely on their parents, who feed them beak-to-beak.
