Known primarily as a muralist and portraitist, Anna Zinkeisen designed and illustrated books, magazines, and posters, as well as creating award-winning ceramics. In collaboration with her sister Doris, also an artist, Zinkeisen painted murals for the passenger liners RMS Queen Mary
and RMS Queen Elizabeth
. Anna Zinkeisen’s self-portrait is exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Zinkeisen designed posters for London Transport from 1933 to 1944, and many of her designs featured athletic figures on horseback, frolicking in the park, or playing sports. Merry-Go-Round
, with its storybook animals, ethereal maidens, and whimsical cherubs, was originally produced in two parts, with each of the two halves gracing its own poster.
