Maurice R. Bebb: Master Printmaker 2018 Wall Calendar
American artist Maurice R. Bebb (1891–1986), largely self-taught, mastered the exacting art of etching and printmaking. Writing a friend, he said, “The greatest thrills I get come from the sight of something really beautiful, and I regret that I did not begin to express my feelings earlier. I did not pick up a pencil until I had passed 50 years.” A print collector since the early 1930s, Bebb started etching in 1943, first exhibited in 1949, and was still working in his nineties. With an abiding interest in birds and a background in floriculture, he often depicted the birds, flora, and landscapes of Oklahoma and Minnesota, and from his extensive travels.
Bebb created more than two hundred print designs and produced prints for the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Print Makers Society of California, and the Prairie Print Makers. More of his work can be seen in the print catalogue raisonné Birds & Beyond: The Prints of Maurice R. Bebb
