Product Description
Makoto Nakamura: Tessellations 2018 Wall Calendar
Tessellations have their roots in ancient Rome, where artisans used tesserae, small squarish tiles, to make bigger pictures, or tessellata. Fourteenth-century Moors and Christians, inspired by the Moors’ style, tiled the Alhambra, in Spain, with colored tiles in geometric shapes in repeating, interlocking patterns. M. C. Escher was inspired by these patterns and created his own tessellations with shapes of animals, people, and plants in repeating patterns without gaps or overlaps. Makoto Nakamura, in turn, was inspired by Escher. Nakamura (Japanese, b. 1947) began creating tessellations in the 1970s after studying graphic design at Tama Art University. He is one of the foremost tessellation artists in the world and founded the Japan Tessellation Design Association. He works digitally, even creating animations and 3-D artworks out of the kinds of creatures found here.
