B. Kliban
The Cats of B. “Hap” Kliban’s imagination have been delighting children and adults since the publication of
Catin 1975. And why not? The timeless Cat, often wearing signature red tennis shoes, lives in a world of adventure that real cats, and their people, can only dream about. Kliban (American, 1935–1990) spent most of his art career in the San Francisco Bay Area. He sold his work to
Playboymagazine, which helped establish him as one of America’s top cartoonists. He also sold cartoons to the
New Yorker,
National Lampoon,
Esquire, and
Punch. Kliban pioneered a new genre of single-panel adult cartoons and published several humor books in addition to his Cat creations. His body of work continues to inspire artists today.
