Introduction
Winslow Homer was one of the greatest American painters. He lived from 1836 to 1910, most of the time in Maine. He also spent time in New York and in England, and many winters in Florida and the Caribbean. His works of art record American life in his day, from scenes of Civil War camps to work and play in the country and by the sea.

Homer was an expert at painting nature. You can almost tell the season of the year and the weather by looking at his pictures. Homer shows a beautiful warm summer day or a storm brewing in the distance. The last page of this book is blank so that you can draw and color your own picture. You might choose a day in a particular season, such as a rainy fall day, a cold winter day, or a breezy spring day.

You will find twenty-two of Homer’s works of art in this coloring book. They are shown as small pictures on the inside front and back covers. When you color the drawings of these pictures you may copy Homer’s colors, or you may decide to use your own. Do you see the image Eight Bells? Homer’s work is not a colorful painting but a black-and-white print. But when you color this drawing, add as many colors as you wish!
