“Buck” to friends, William Herbert Dunton was a master of the American West. After establishing a studio in Taos, New Mexico, in 1912, he helped found the Taos Society of Artists in 1915 and eventually moved to the community permanently. He left behind a career in commercial illustration for a less lucrative life painting nostalgic scenes, trumpeting on behalf of the old West’s rapidly diminishing way of life.
