Bouquet of Flowers
(Bouquet de Fleurs
), probably 1909–1910, Henri Rousseau (French, 1844–1910). Oil on canvas, 18 1/4 x 13 1/8 in. (46.4 x 33.3 cm).
Although Henri Rousseau is perhaps best known for his exotic, brightly colored jungle scenes, he attached great importance to his floral still lifes, which were meticulously constructed. As one critic writes, “So resolute is Rousseau’s treatment of each detail that it almost seems possible to dismantle the flower arrangement.”
