Steve Miller Book of Postcards

The Grand Canyon’s worldwide acclaim derives almost exclusively from the views available from the canyon’s rims. Few people see the Grand from the Colorado River. They miss incredible intricacies created by a river that has cut through more than 277 miles of earth to expose colorful rocks, secret side canyons, lush gardens of flowers and ferns, and sparkling waterfalls. The river itself, sometimes powerful and sometimes placid, creates a magical wonderland a vertical mile below the rims of the Grand Canyon.

Getting to the bottom of the Grand Canyon requires considerable effort and investment--by descending via trails on foot or on muleback or by embarking on an extended whitewater river trip. The river trip, an adventure in itself, is to be preferred, providing access to the entire Colorado River corridor and the fantastic variety of sights it encompasses. This is the remote and hidden heart of the Grand Canyon, containing wonders never imagined by those who look into the canyon from above.
