Frederick Douglass (1817?–1895), American abolitionist, lecturer, and writer, who escaped slavery in 1838, bought his freedom, and founded and edited The North Star, an abolitionist paper, from 1847 to 1860. Abraham Lincoln sought Douglass's counsel during the Civil War.
