Product Description
Claude Monet: Sailboats Notecard Folio
Sailboats seem to rock and sway as water ripples around them. A sailing regatta near the commune of Argenteuil is reflected in the shimmering river. Sky and waterway blend harmoniously, creating an idyllic picture of life along the Seine in the nineteenth century.

Claude Monet (1840–1926), a central and influential figure among the French impressionists, spent much of his childhood near Le Havre on the Normandy coast, observing the sea, the sky, and the ever-changing play of light upon the water. As a teenager he studied drawing and created detailed pencil sketches of sailing ships.

He began painting when he met Eugène Boudin, one of the first French landscape artists to paint outdoors. Monet was profoundly affected by the immediacy of painting in plein air, which allowed him to capture his impression of the landscape while being immersed in it. His loose, fragmented brushstrokes and brighter palette broke from the more formal painting styles of the day.

After some years away, Monet returned to France in 1872 and settled in Argenteuil, outside Paris. He began producing views of the Seine that displayed his mastery of the interplay between reflections, shadows, and the surface of the water. These early works represent a time before his paintings of the water lilies at Giverny, when crisp lines could still be found on his canvases.

Contains 5 each of the following images:
Sailboats on the Seine at Petit-Gennevilliers, 1874
