Product Description
Sir John Lavery Notecard Folio
A leading member of the internationally renowned group of artists known as the Glasgow Boys, Sir John Lavery (1856–1941) was born in Belfast but spent much of his life in Scotland. Lavery studied at the Glasgow School of Art and at the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1888, on the occasion of Queen Victoria’s state visit to the Glasgow International Exhibition, Lavery—already noted for his portraiture—was commissioned to paint her official portrait; thus began a career as a society painter. Also an official war artist during World War I, Lavery was knighted in 1918 and elected to the Royal Academy in 1921.

The Glasgow Boys, a group of some twenty young artists who were born or worked mainly in Scotland, revolutionized Scottish art in the late nineteenth century. Although they worked in a variety of styles, they shared an aesthetic that opposed contemporary conventions of subject, style, and finish; their enthusiasm was for the real, the natural, and the uncontrived.

Contains five each of the following notecards:
A Rally, 1885
The Tennis Party (detail), 1885
