Product Description
Lawren S. Harris Notecard Folio
As a founding member of the Group of Seven and the Canadian Group of Painters, Lawren Harris had a profound influence on several generations of artists in Canada. Born into a wealthy business family, he attended the University of Toronto and then studied art in Berlin for four years. By 1913 Harris had met Tom Thomson and all the future founding members of the Group of Seven. During a sketching trip to Algoma, Harris and fellow Group member A.Y. Jackson decided to explore the northeast Lake Superior coast. The experience was a turning point for Harris. The hulking islands in the bay, the glacier-stripped hills along the shoreline, and the fire-ravaged forests behind them revealed the northern Ontario hinterland in its most essential state. In response Harris resolved to purge his art of excess detail and to seek out the basic structures underlying natural forms. His austere, eternal images of trees, lakes, mountains, shorelines and skies capture a universal, profound spirituality. After becoming an adherent of the mystical movement of theosophy, which originated in the United States in 1875, Harris adopted more abstract forms while still using the landscape as a point of departure.
