Product Description
Norval Morrisseau Notecard Folio
Taught the history and ceremonial traditions of the Anishnabek, Norval Morrisseau (also called Copper Thunderbird; Canadian, b. 1931) began drawing the legends of his people at a very early age. Later, while working in mining, he continued to develop his art. Morrisseau became a full-time artist in the early 1960s, creating the pictographic Woodland School of painting. Soon his vibrant, richly colored imagery had attracted the attention of Toronto gallery owner Jack Pollock, who organized a solo exhibition of his work that garnered critical acclaim.

Morrisseau’s 1975 paintings Artist’s Wife and Daughter and Self-Portrait, reproduced here, were the first of more than sixty of his works acquired by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Today the McMichael continues to collect and exhibit paintings by Morrisseau and by First Nations artists who have been influenced by his unique style.
